Your Rising Sign: The JV Jersey You Were Born Wearing

Updated: Oct 12

How people first experience you, what your Ascendant says about your body and presence, and why your chart ruler changes the story.

Some people look completely confident walking into a room, and you find out later they were quietly panicking the entire time. They carried themselves like they knew exactly what they were doing while privately hoping somebody would explain the rules. šŸ˜‚

That is one of the great, silent lessons life teaches us: what we look like hardly tells the whole story....

The truth is that confident person was stretching outside of their comfort zone and leaning into their growing edge. And by the time they do that same thing a few hundred times, though they may still be a tiny bit nervous, they will be far closer to fully embodying the image they are projecting.

In a very real way, this is how you work with your Rising sign every day. It's also one of the reasons you may never have felt like an out-loud Leo or a mysterious, dark Scorpio (the list goes on!). Your Sun sign is your crown, where you shine. Your Rising sign is the next stage you'll step onto, the shoes you're meant to learn to fill in this lifetime.

Some call it the mask we wear. It's what people see and how we act, and only those who really know us begin to unpack all the unique feathers of any one soul's chart.

Why I Call It a JV Jersey

One of my favorite sayings is that your Rising sign is a JV jersey. You're on the team. You made the cut. You're here!Ā But you're still learning the ropes, which means you get to look ahead and watch how the players in front of you work with this energy.

So who's on varsity? The people whose Sun sign is the same as your Rising sign.Ā If you're a Leo Rising, the Leo Suns in your life have been playing this position since the day they were born. What you're growing into, they wear as a crown.

Here's the cool part: that may be exactly why certain people show up in your life the way they do. Have you ever clicked with someone instantlyĀ and couldn't say why? Check their Sun sign. Sometimes you're the JV player looking at a varsity player and thinking, "I want to play just like that."Ā They're living the best of that sign right out loud, and something in you recognizes where you're headed.

And have you ever taken an instant issue with somebodyĀ for no good reason? Check that, too. šŸ˜‚ Sometimes you're the JV player watching a senior who isn't pulling their weight and keeps taking the shortcuts. It bothers you more than it bothers anybody else, because that's your team they're representing.

Either way, notice how often people with that Sun sign find their way to you. It can feel downright magnetic.Ā Look for the healthy role models among them, because watching someone wear your Rising sign well is one of the best ways to learn how to wear it yourself.

Your Rising Sign and Your Ascendant

Your Rising sign is the zodiac sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. The exact degree of that sign is your Ascendant, the ASC you'll see marked on your chart.

That's where the first house begins (and by default, it sets up the flow of all your other houses).

The first house is traditionally associated with your physical body, your appearance, your vitality, and your overall approach to life.

A Few Fun Tells

Because the first house has to do with the body, astrologers have long noticed that each Rising sign tends to carry a certain look or way of moving. See if you recognize yourself, or somebody you love:

  • Aries Rising:Ā walks in head first and fast, with a direct look and a face that shows exactly what it thinks.

  • Taurus Rising:Ā steady and unhurried, often with strong shoulders and a voice people like listening to.

  • Gemini Rising:Ā quick, lively eyes and hands that do half the talking. Often looks younger than the birth certificate says.

  • Cancer Rising:Ā a soft, expressive face where every feeling shows up, even when they'd rather it didn't.

  • Leo Rising:Ā great hair, good posture, and a warmth you can feel from across the room.

  • Virgo Rising:Ā neat and put together, with fine features and eyes that are quietly taking notes.

  • Libra Rising:Ā a pleasing, balanced look and an easy smile, often with dimples.

  • Scorpio Rising:Ā the eyes. A steady, magnetic gaze that makes people feel seen straight through.

  • Sagittarius Rising:Ā a big, bold smile, a long stride, and a laugh you can hear from the parking lot.

  • Capricorn Rising:Ā strong bone structure and a serious first impression. They often look younger as the years go by.

  • Aquarius Rising:Ā something a little unexpected about the look, a style all their own, friendly and slightly far away at the same time.

  • Pisces Rising:Ā soft, dreamy eyes and a gentle way of moving, like they're hearing music nobody else can hear.

Now, please don't go guessing a stranger's birth time from their cheekbones. šŸ˜‚ These are tendencies, and your appearance is shaped by the rest of your chart, too: your Sun, any planet sitting in your first house, and especially the planet that rules your Rising sign. Family genes and ordinary life have their say as well.

Which brings us to that ruling planet.

Meet Your Chart Ruler

Every sign has a ruling planet, and the planet that rules your Rising sign is called your chart ruler. Where that planet sits in your chart, which planet it answers to, and how the energy flows from one to the next all play into the story of your Rising sign.

Say two people have Sagittarius Rising, making Jupiter their ruler. One has Jupiter in Virgo in the 10th house and finds growth through useful work, teaching, and professional responsibility. The other has Jupiter in Pisces in the 4th and puts that energy into family, home, or creating a place of belonging. Same Rising sign, different practice field.

And that is the theme you'll keep running into the more you explore your own chart: you are truly one of a kind. No one else has your chart.

Modern astrology also connects Scorpio with Pluto, Aquarius with Uranus, and Pisces with Neptune. Those planets can add to the picture, and the traditional rulers are where I'd start.

Once you've found your ruler, jot down the sign and the house it's in. That house is a part of life where a whole lot of your story gets lived.

Bonus points:Ā Ready to go one step further? Your chart ruler is sitting in a sign, and that sign has a ruler, too. Go find that planet. Then find the ruler of the sign it's in, and keep following the trail. You're tracing how the energy flows through your chart, from one planet to the next. Sometimes the trail ends at a planet in its own sign, and sometimes it circles back around. Either way, you just read a chart the way an astrologer does.

Try Your Rising Sign Horoscope

If you're still new to astrology and exploring, try listening to the horoscope for your Rising signĀ more than the one for your Sun sign. It should fit a little better.

Here's why: horoscopes are usually written by putting each sign in the first house and following the planets from there. So the areas of life in your Rising sign's forecast line up with your own houses.

A Fun Little Exercise to See How This Works

Think about what strangers tend to assume about you. They may expect you to lead, listen, organize, entertain, or keep everyone calm. That's your jersey talking.

Now pull up your chart, find your chart ruler in the table above, and fill in the blanks:

"My Rising sign is ________, so people tend to see me as ________. My chart ruler is ________, and it lives in my ________ house, so that's where I'm learning to wear this jersey."

Read it back to yourself. If one quality people praise in you still feels a size too big, that's the part of the jersey you're growing into. šŸ’›
